Maintaining a home is a cornerstone of independence, yet it often presents unique challenges for clients with vision loss. Our newest course, Teaching Home Maintenance to Individuals with Visual Impairments, is designed to equip vision rehabilitation professionals with the practical tools and adaptive strategies needed to help clients manage their living spaces, inside and out, with safety and confidence. 

Focus of the Course 

Moving beyond basic organization, this curriculum focuses on making everyday tasks accessible by identifying hazards and implementing effective organizational systems for individuals with blindness or low vision.  

By teaching practical adaptations for cleaning, minor repairs, and tool use, the course shifts the focus from limitations to resourceful problem-solving, empowering clients to maintain their homes with greater independence and confidence. 

Learning Objectives 

This course provides the framework for professionals to: 

1. Identify essential safety measures and organizational strategies for indoor and outdoor home maintenance tasks. 

2. Apply adaptive techniques for common household activities such as cleaning, minor repairs, and tool use, tailored to varying levels of vision. 

3. Develop individualized plans to support clients in managing home maintenance tasks independently and effectively.

This course is available for 1 ACVREP credit.
