HKNC Confident Living Program for Individuals with Combined Vision and Hearing Loss: An Overview

Summary

This presentation will highlight Helen Keller National Center for Deaf-Blind Youth and Adults’s (HKNC) Confident Living Program (CLP) for older adults 55 and “better” who have combined vision and hearing loss, as well as his work as Senior Adult Specialist.  The CLP has been in existence since 1994 and offered continuously until the COVID pandemic shut down.  However, the CLP lives on! Join the presentation to learn more about the new Confident Living Virtual World program available to consumers in 2021.

Mark Armstrong is the Senior Adult Specialist for HKNC. He works with seniors, age 55 and “better” who have combined vision and hearing loss. He facilitates the Confident Living Program, offered twice a year at the Helen Keller National Training Center in Sands Point, NY, and On-the-Road throughout communities in the United States. Mark earned a Master of Arts in Vision Rehabilitation Therapy from Western Michigan University in 2010 and is certified as a Certified Vision Rehabilitation Specialist (CVRT) by ACVREP. He is currently Chair-Elect for AER Division on Aging. Mark is retired from the United States Marine Corps, where he served as a Bugler in “The Commandant’s Own,” The United States Marine Drum and Bugle Corps. Mark is a Blinded Veteran who also has hearing loss. He resides in North Carolina and has been married 32 years to his wife, Kay.
